I...

...want to be where there is noise, and chaos and confusion
...want to be where there are more people than a street can manage
...want to hear the honks of vehicles behind me, breathe in the smoke, peer through the dust to forge ahead
...want to sit at Deli 9/Coffee Day/Barista, hold a mug of insanely expensive coffee and bitch forever
...want to do some girl talk
...want to go on the crowded roads all over again in great abandon
... want to eat pani puri and figure out if the bandiwaala at Bangalore is dirtier, therefore, tastier than the one at Hyderabad
...want to ride in those cabs and experience the monotony of office
....want to dance in all those jam sessions again
....want to stare at women who wear clothes considered inappropriate and glare at men who stare at them
...want to see Hyderabad Central
...want to shop at Lifestyle
...want to eat bhutta
...want to pretend to run for cover during monsoons
...want to watch fruit vendors swatting flies on their gaadi
...want to see autos
...want to fight with auto drivers
...want to watch movies all night with girl friends
...want to meet V and V for an elaborate girls day out
...want to meet C and S for coffee
... want to meet D over coffee at the coffee machine
...want S to make more fun of me
... want to see A by paying Rs 5000 for a flight and without adding another 0 to it
...want to SMS
...want to catch late night movies with the girls
...want to talk to Amma
...want to fight with sisters
...want to make faces at Pati
...want to ride the Kinetic Honda
...want to weave through traffic and fear for my life from the nearest drunk biker
...want to travel on dirty trains
...want to get a cheap haircut
...want to feel like I want to relax
...want to read/listen to politics, crime news, scandals, scams and real news and not the so-called news about Bush's misspelling/mispronunciation (Our speechwriters will never let it happen even if our politicians will.)
...want to see a sea of humanity doing various things, breaking rules, living by them, surviving
...want to see friends. Dammit, some people, any people. People I can talk about, imagine things about, talk to, bitch about, bitch to, laugh about, laugh with...

You'll find almost all of these in NYC.

i totally relate to ur post. it is something that i would have written, maybe in my first 2 years in USA. that feeling will always remain. it wont fade away, because we have so much of everything abt our country embedded in us. the plus point is, each time you visit india, it makes the trip all the more sweeter. and most of all, you learn to appreciate everything about india.

@ Arun: I hate NYC btw. And I want to eat pani puri, the dirty ones. Not the ones checked on by FDA!

@ Macabreday: :) I know I know! sigh

@ Nags: omg, such a coincidence. I was telling Ajit that today! Yes, US is too far off and not to my liking and all that!

@ Gradwolf: Welcome! Loved your Galeej post :) Sigh, yes. We should make do with our local Indian grocery. I prance around like a kid at our local Indian grocery store.

aiyo homesick. i am too - homesick for a stage in life :(

How odd this is to read--I am homesick for friends but otherwise restless for new surroundings, new cultures, something that actually makes me feel surprised without stressing me out unduly.

Are you living in a suburb, Nandini? I felt like this on a trip that included North American suburbs. I kept feeling that I was the only person left in the Twilight Zone.... until I found "downtown" and started enjoying myself.

@ Cynic: Aaah, like that. Sigh. It all seems like I was living a dream or a reality TV show ;)

@ Scribbler: We stay in the Midtown, Scribbler. Downtown is close, not all that close and I have not gotten my license yet and ya, its HOT to go there now :( And ya, no friends...so.. :(

How dare you talk ill of NYC? You should be deported, just for that.

Nandini Vishwanath said...

So, how does this work? Should I let my husband know before I pack or can I just leave? Is there a helpline number that will go to India which can answer my FAQs? :P

Arun Sundar said...

You have an FAQ set on deportation? Cool. Be informed that talking ill of Chennai or NYC is a Federal offense in KK Nagar (Kaedi Kabali Nagar).

Nandini Vishwanath said...

Omg, am soooooo scared. Btw, what is kk nagar. And Chennai, sigh, the heat is intolerable. Sorry, I'm a Bangalorean married to a Chennaiite, which is problematic enough!
